The Shia Muslim community on Sunday observed Ashura day, taking out a procession of Alams across the streets of old city near Charminar as part of the Muharram.

The Ashura day is observed to commemorate the historic martyrdom of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) grandson Imam Hussain in Karbala. Members of the community mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain along with many of his family members on the fateful day.

People whip themselves with blades and wear black attires as part of mourning. Waater and other drinks were being freely distributed across many streets in the old city as part of the Ashura.
