As part of the ‘World Space Week’ celebrations, which began on October 4, National Remote Sensing Centre, ISRO organised an open exhibition at its Balanagar and Jeedimetla outreach campuses.

In this regard, quiz and drawing competitions for schoolchildren were organised, which will run until October 8. The winners will be awarded at the concluding function at IMGEOS facility in Shadnagar.

World Space Week observance was inaugurated by Dr YVN Krishna Murthy, Director, NRSC at Balanagar on Wednesday. The programme was organised in association with another Hyderabad-based organisation Space Adhyaan.

Dr V Bhanumurthy, Associate Director, WG CMR Vibhas Singh Gupta, Controller, NRSC, Dr B Gopalakrishna, Dr PVN Rao, Dr MVR Seshasai, and Raghu Venkatraman, Deputy Directors, along with other Senior Scientists of NRSC were present at the event.

The Director NRSC addressed the scientists at NRSC’s Earth Station at Bharati, Antarctica and the guests at Jeedimetla Outreach facility in video and audio conference mode.

During his address, he apprised the guests about the importance and potential of earth observation, communication and navigation in good governance. He urged the students to make best use of the outreach facility and come up with novel and innovative applications of remote sensing data.

Speaking at Balanagar campus, he apprised the guests about ISRO’s initiatives (BHUVAN, NAVIK, Indian Remote Sensing sensors for earth, ocean and atmosphere), the capabilities and applications of remote sensing data in resource mapping and monitoring; identification of potential fishing zones which leads to increased yield and saving of fuel; weather forecasts and disaster mitigation and management for saving lives and speedy relief activities; food security, crop insurance and asset mapping, to name a few.

School and college students arrived in large numbers to benefit from the opportunity that included people from institutions like Aeronautical Engineering College, St. Joseph’s College, Delhi Public School, parents, teachers, lecturers and professors.

The exhibits by NRSC and Space Adhyaan, videos and demonstration of ISRO’s Earth Observation Portal – Bhuvan, were appreciated by the visitors.
