Ramakrishnapuram: Pretty cut and infuriated with the Army and municipal authorities, 30-odd citizens living in and around Sainikpuri met at the Ramakrishnapuram bridge here on Sunday to fill up potholes and renew their call to reopen the old bypass road.

“We will not stop our shramdaan till the authorities take action,” said Gulshan Bamboat who was instrumental in undertaking a similar act at the 100ft road from Harmony Chowk to AOC.

Explaining the problems, the commuters face at Ramkrishnapuram Bridge, C S Chandrashekar said, “The bus stop is at the mouth of the flyover and the road is narrow. Army personnel stop traffic when the staff moves out of their office.”

Locals want the old bypass road to be reopened as it would ease traffic and be helpful for both civilians as well as Army personnel. Another demand is to move the bus stop to another location as the road is narrow.

The residents under the banner Green Sainikpuri say that they would continue shramdaan till the authorities take notice. Chandrasekhar said, “What compounds the problem is the curvy road. At the bus stop, the road is 30ft wide and further down opposite the Army School it is 60 ft wide. As commuters inch towards the flyover, the road narrows inevitably causing traffic jam.”

During the night, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) lorries that carry garbage slows down traffic. Mahender, a medical representative and a resident of Neredmet said, “Office goers return between 7pm to 9pm and it is during this time that the lorries pass through the area not only slowing traffic but a health hazard.”

Residents of Vayupuri, Sainikpuri, Neredmet, Malkajgiri, A S Rao Nagar, Vivekananapuram, Yapral and beyond use the Ramakrishnapurm Bridge.
