Neredmet: After the road beneath the Ramakrishnapuram Flyover was closed by defence officials, the area turned unsafe owing to drunkards and drug addicts, who are allegedly harassing residents and commuters. The area, which was once well-protected due to regular movement of vehicles and defence personnel, has become a zone threating security of passers-by, especially women. It isn’t only during the night that people consume alcohol there, but drugs and other immoral activities continue in broad daylight. People consume alcohol in the open and rogue groups of youth station themselves on the staircase, which leads to the flyover, and harass women there.

A resident, on condition of anonymity revealed, “Men do not only consume alcohol here. They do drugs and dance on the roads playing music on high volume. When my uncle scolded them, they started blocking the staircase, which is the only way to the flyover.”

“We complained to the police several times, but no action has been taken. Even the Welfare Associations are afraid to take action against the tea stall owner, who is the major seller of cannabis (marijuana) to the youth. I have seen men doing drugs in their vehicles that are parked in the abandoned area near the railway lines,” said the source.

Meanwhile, the police seem to unaware about the miscreants and maintain that no complain has been filed about the matter. M Jagadish Chander, Inspector at Neredmet Police Station said that they were unaware of the issue. “There is no written complaint about any harassment or anything from that area. But if anyone’s causing trouble, we will take them into custody,” he assured. Only time will tell if any action is taken or not.
