Moula Ali: Providing medical assistance at only Rs 5, Mobile Health Units of HelpAge India Foundation work relentlessly to serve hundreds of poor senior citizens, who cannot afford to visit hospitals regularly. Nearly 70 senior citizens from slums of SP Nagar and Hanuman Nagar at Moula Ali religiously wait for the mobile units every Thursday to avail the facilities offered at the health unit.

From organising health check-ups to distributing tablets, the mobile units function as mini-hospitals that bring medical care to doorsteps. Comprising of well-trained doctors and pharmacists, the health units are no less than guardian angels for the poor and elderly people.

“We mostly offer services for free at the mobile units, but it is the elder people here who voluntarily pay money as a sign of self-respect. Most of them suffer from diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis. Since they cannot go to a doctor frequently, we are more than happy to pay them a visit every week,” said Vijayalakshmi, Unit In-charge and Social Protection Officer.

Apart from rendering medical services, the mobile health units aide the poor aged citizens with hearing machines and walking sticks to help them lead an independent life. To ensure that the elderly people do not rely on medicines, these units make sure that only a week’s supply is provided to them, which is strictly revised by the doctor on a regularly.

When asked how they are being treated at the mobile health unit, Saroja, a 75-year-old patient, who suffers from hypertension, said, “The doctors here are amicable. They visit to us every week. I have terrible knee pains, but with the ointment that the doctor prescribes, I feel much better and relieved. We have all become so familiar with the staff here that many people help the team in registration and other arrangements.”
