AS Rao Nagar: In a shocking allegation, residents of South Kamalanagar here claim that a few members of Welfare Association hinder the maintenance and functioning of a municipal bore. According to residents, the members have multiple Manjeera Water connections and they turn a blind eye to the maintenance of the bore. Consequently, there is no drinking water facility for locals, who are in turn forced to shell out up to Rs 500 every three days for charges of a water tanker.

Alleging corrupt behaviour on part of Welfare Association members, Narsimha Reddy, a senior citizen of the area said, "Some influential people including members from Welfare Association have two to three Manjeera Water connection, therefore they are least interested in solving our drinking water problem. It becomes very difficult to look for people in our colony who can spend Rs 550 in a span of two to three days for drinking water.”

According to Reddy when GHMC workers visited the area to fix the bore last month, Welfare Association members got in the way of it. “When GHMC workers visited Welfare Association members to get the materials for repair, they asked them to come the next day saying the pipes that were brought were in a locked room and that the keys were with somebody who was out of station,” he revealed and alleged that members have been getting in the way of the municipal bore’s repair for quite some time now.

When contacted, a senior official from GHMC Kapra division assured to fix the matter and said, "I shall escalate this issue to the Water Board and ensure timely action is taken by them."

About 50,000 residents are left in a thirsty state due to the breakdown of the bore. The residents demanded that once when the bore gets repaired, they want the responsibility of its maintenance with the GHMC and not Welfare Association.
