Hyderabad: Christmas cheer has taken over the city already and one of the best things about the festival is the juicy cake. Bakers at small and big outlets here are revelling in the spirit of the festival and rum cakes, designer varieties, three-tier beauties and others are ruling the roost everywhere. Given that trends and rates are surging over the years, bakers are having a field day.

According to a baker, Sunil from Karkhana in the past five years prices of Christmas cakes saw a surge by over 40 per cent. “At my outlet it’s mostly three-tier and plum cakes sold the most during the festival. The prices of cakes vary between Rs 470 and Rs 1,200 per kg.”

A bakery in Ameerpet said that the rates of cake depends upon its design. The baker said, “A 1kg cake is sold at Rs 800 and goes on to Rs 1500 depending on customisations made in its design. Now-a-days, most people opt for personal details, which are made in fondant, on their cakes. It takes time to carve intricate details and hence, the price is up.”

However, for most people it’s the basic plum and rum cake that they take home. Even so, their prices go up to Rs 1,000 for a kilogram. The surging rates do not dampen anyone’s festive spirit.

A resident of Mehdipatnam S Sahitya shared," Christmas is the only festival where we decorate our home, make special dishes and prepare a rose cake. We go to church for the 11pm mass and the cool winter night amidst the lit city makes for a blissful atmosphere.”
Be it homemade or store-bought or even at fancy restaurants, this is one Christmas tradition that everyone enjoys.
