Uppal: Crores of rupees spent to beautify the city recently and more used in establishing the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) – it all seems to be going down the drain owing to one flooded nala that flows beside the swanky premises of HMR’s Uppal depo. What makes the view for this new, state-of-the-art station with luxurious surroundings is the dirty water that flows beside it and the stink surrounding it.

Ever since the Metro was launched, I observed that in comparison to other stations, the crowd here at Nagole is less. I commute on the Metro daily and this nala is the reason why nobody opts to alight at the station here

According to residents, the nala is a cause of nuisance for over six years now and that passers-by and commuters are continually choked by its stink. Moreover, industrial wastes from Uppal, Nagole and LB Nagar flow through this nala increasing the dangers it poses. A resident Maya Amma said, “Although it is especially horrible during rainy season, the dirty water from these nalas flows on the roads throughout the year. The stink is terribly!”

A youngster Vishnu, who is an MCom student is saddened by the plight of the Metro station due to the nala. “Ever since the Metro come up, I observed that in comparison to other stations, the crowd here at Nagole is less. I commute on the Metro daily and this nala is the reason why nobody opts to alight at the station here,” he opined.

Residents inform that the pipelines of the nalas are unattended for the last five years. In addition, dirty water is sometimes mixed with drinking water. Problems like mosquitoes breeding and files and other insects spreading diseases in the area are on the rise. “This is the main reason why pushcart vendors are scared to enter the area,” said Brahmaiah, a local fruit vendor.

When contacted Mukund Reddy, Deputy Commissioner for GHMC Nagole division said, “We put up a proposal for the segregation of industrial units a few months ago. Once this proposal is approved, the industrial wastes from Uppal, Nagole and LB Nagar would be directed to other places and the problem would reduce.”
