Neredmet: Residents across Neredmet colonies can pat their backs for their proactive participating in ensuring heightened surveillance in the area not only brought down the crime rate, but has given new meaning to the phrase ‘community involvement’. The impact is result of police personnel conducting the ‘Nenu Saitham’ programme in colonies to bring awareness about using CCTV cameras.

A positive impact of police ‘Nenu Saitham’ initiative is seen in colonies at Neredmet where nearly 300 to 350 cameras were installed by individuals, residents and business houses in front of their buildings thereby not only helping the police in reducing the crime rate but also creating a fear among those who even think of indulging in criminal activities

It began with the Neredmet police installing 50 CCTV cameras in places at Vayupuri Colony, Defence Colony, Neredmet X Roads, Yapral and Tulasi Nagar to curb malpractices. The ‘Nenu Saitham’ programme by the law-enforcement agents educated people about measures that they can take in case of emergencies. Fortunately, the concept caught the interest of people.

A positive impact of the programme is seen in colonies at Neredmet where nearly 300 to 350 cameras were installed by individuals, residents and business houses in front of their buildings thereby not only helping the police in reducing the crime rate but also creating a fear among those who even think of indulging in criminal activities.

Shivaiah, secretary of the Defence Colony at Neredmet informs that a few years ago, incidents of chain-snatching and robberies were reported in the area even in broad daylight. “But, ever since the Welfare Association began to establish CCTV cameras over the 112 acres of the colony, residents feel much safer even to take a stroll even late in the evenings,” he said.

It is informed that the Defence Colony that houses ex-army men, serving army officials, widows of army personnel and civilians is strictly under surveillance of 31 CCTV cameras that are present at the entrance, in middle of the roads, near lanes and at the exits. Meanwhile, the Vayupuri Welfare Association, which already has 16 cameras in place, is planning to fix 12 more to tighten security at all points of the neighbourhood.

“CCTV cameras have helped immensely in reducing the crime rate in the Neredmet region. It helps us to not only track criminals but also to keep a tab on illegal activities that go around in the nearby surroundings. Proactive colony associations are being helpful in maintaining law and order of the neighbourhood.

We would welcome more number of individuals especially those living near the basthi areas or residents living in the interiors to setup cameras not only for our surveillance but in fact for their own safety,” said Jagadeesh Chander, Inspector at Neredmet Police Station.
