Nacharam: In a major case of high-handedness, authorities left two major water bodies at Nacharam, HMT Lake and Patelkunta Cheruvu Nacharam in a polluted state. What’s worse is that after multiple representations, GHMC had sanctioned funds to clear the water bodies two years ago, however, no action has been implemented towards it.

According to residents, the two lakes are in a dilapidated condition for the past 20 years both authorities and locals indulge in polluting the water bodies. Locals inform that waste from industries across Nacharam and houses in the 80 colonies is dumped into these lakes and that authorities have not deputed anyone to keep a check on this.

When contacted, a senior official from GHMC Maintenance Department said that an amount of Rs 3 crore was sanctioned for cleaning of the lakes in 2015. “However, the GHMC is yet to clear the tenders. Till the time we get an all-clear, we cannot do anything,” he said in an offhanded manner.

Meanwhile, problems are on the rise for locals who are living in the shadow of stink and surging diseases. Krishna, a local said, “The stink from these lakes has made the stay of the residents in and around the surrounding areas a hell. We can neither go out of our houses in the morning for walk nor can our children have fresh air in the evening.”

Informing the situation of breeding insects, Mallama, a local fruit vendor lamented, “Flies, mosquitoes, and other insects keep breeding on these polluted waters. People have stopped buying fruits and other items pushcart vendors because they are afraid for their health. Business is getting affected only because the civic authorities are behaving irresponsibly!”

According to residents, the situation of the lakes becomes more troublesome during rainy season as hyacinth, algae and filth from the water bodies is flooded on the streets thereby forcing people to move through it. “Sometimes, this dirty water enters our homes and in our drinking water pipelines, too,” rued Brahmaiah, a local.

Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, a retired government employee added, “The water pipelines are so horrible here that dirty water from lakes and sewerages get mixed with the drinking water. Our lives are in extreme danger and the government is silent about it.”
