Domalguda: Christmas of this year was a big day for hundreds of distraught families staying in the vicinity of Indira Park and adjoining localities like Domalguda, Musheerabad and Kavadiguda.

The urge to make use of an opportunity to brave the chilly days was evident right from the morning when several men and women, most of them frail and wrinkle-ridden, queued up at the Bharat Sevashram Sangha premises at Lower Tank Bund on Monday. In keeping with the Trust’s avowed mission to help the distressed, nurse the sick, feed the hungry and help clothe the have-nots, the Sangha organised a blanket distribution function to an overwhelming response.

According to Swami Munishvarananda, Secretary of the Hyderabad branch of the nationally networked Trust, they had distributed 350 blankets to all those who turned up on the occasion. Most of them were either slum-dwellers or belonged to impoverished families and unable to bear the particularly cold winter of this year.

The distribution was done by Dr K Laxman, President of Bharatiya Janata Party’s Telangana State unit. He praised the efforts of the Sangha in rendering such humanitarian tasks that was helping mitigate problems of the poorer lot of the society, at least to some extent.

Swamy Venkatehwarananda, who was present on the occasion, said that they felt humbled whenever they went about such humane endeavours.

Incidentally, the occasion also marked a celebration of the 93rd birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, whose colossal contribution drew special praise from the speakers.

Swami Munishvarananda said that they had drawn up more initiatives that were meant to provide succour to the economically-deprived sections of the society and make their life more meaningful.
