Recent evidence indicates that India is heading towards a major sanitation crisis in the coming years. The fastest growing economy seems to have missed out on having adequate toilet facilities for as high as 65 per cent of its population. For example, nearly half of India’s 1.2 billion people have no toilet at home, but more than half of the people here own a mobile phone, indicates a latest census data

For example, nearly half of India’s one point two billion people have no toilet at home, but more than half of India's people own a mobile phone, indicates the latest census data.

Yadagiri Rao, Deputy Commissioner GHMC Uppal circle told The Hans India, “Till date we have constructed 17 toilets under the categories of Built Operate and Transit (BOT), under this scheme we encouraged the area dwellers to construct toilets. Apart from these toilets such as Me -Seva toilets and E Toilets would be available for the people on pay and use basis.”

He added, “We have deployed one person for every toilet for its maintenance throughout the day, we are also planning to provide toilet cleaning kit very soon.”

When asked about further plans on defecation control programme, Rao said “We have started to construct toilets in every house under INHL (Individual Household Latrine) programme. In this programme we are trying to indentify houses in the area that do not have toilets and getting it constructed for them. If they are ready to get it constructed, we are giving Rs 12,000 for each family.”

“We had started this initiative last year and as of now we have constructed seven such toilets for the families in Uppal region, we plan to complete this mission of each house having a toilet for almost 4.5 lakh population by February 2018,” he said.
