Hyderabad: Following the grandeur enjoyed by Telugu language at the World Telugu Conference (WTC), the State’s decision to now put Urdu on prominence was met with welcome arms by intellectuals, poets, and writers from the Old City.

  • International Urdu Conference (IUC) will tentatively be held in February 2018
  • Termed as ‘Jashn-e-Urdu’, the event would bring Urdu poets, novelists, and academicians from across the globe under one roof
  • Sessions on ghazals and qawwalis planned
  • An international mushaira to be organised
  • Special care would be taken to include Dakhni

In this regard, a round table conference was held here to discuss the components of the event, which is tentatively called ‘Jashn-e-Urdu’ and is scheduled for February 2018.

The WTC saw attendance of prominent figures from across the globe, who celebrated their love of the language. Besides this, poets, writers and authors from Andhra Pradesh were also invited to the event.

As part of the decision, the State began discussions with Urdu professors and academics besides contacting the concerned authorities to organise the conference. It may be recalled that the Telangana government recently declared Urdu as the second official language of the State.

Setwin chairman Inayat Ali Baqri is supporting the people associated with ‘Jashn-e-Urdu’ in the Old City. Speaking to The Hans India, he said that Urdu is the language of the region and it must be given its due place in governance today.

He appreciated the move of the State government and said that the event will work as a catalyst for people who love Urdu and will aid authorities in ascertaining extra measures to mainstream the language.

Baqri said that basic discussions regarding the conference were completed and further brainstorming would be done in the coming days regarding the nature of the conference.
Meanwhile, people in Old City opined that recognising the importance of Urdu was a good initiative. Sanaullah Khan from Hussaini Alam said that the language must be protected by the government. He said that without the patronage of government, no language can survive and thrive.
