  • Residents facing problems due to garbage at GHMC Transfer Station for eight years now
  • The area has become breeding ground for mosquitoes and other parasites
  • Locals allege that their complaints have fallen on deaf ears

The dump yard has become a bigger breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies. The locals informed that in the evening along with the stench the mosquitoes and flies swarm into the home and makes living in the area perilous. The inhabitants allege that in spite of several complaints to the officials no action has been taken so far.

Mohan Reddy, a software professional, said, "The stink from the station has actually left me losing out my smelling senses. The worst part is when the vehicles come laden with the garbage they stand for hours together, which makes people difficult to travel for at least two kilometres in and around the area. And because of this fewer people use the Metro Rail from this junction.”

Jangaiah, an auto driver from Uppal said, “It gets worst in the monsoon. The garbage from the dump yard flows on the roads and enters neighbouring areas. Instead of cleaning this mess, it is left to dry and it all then depends on the rain; if it continues to pour then there is no respite from this menace in the rainy season."

Yadamma, a food centre owner, stated that after 4 pm it becomes an impossible task to sit in the shop as mosquitoes swarm in as the dump yard is the breeding grounds for the mosquitoes. And it is not only mosquitoes but houseflies are also rampant in the area. It is taking a toll on our business as the food is contaminated. And we continue to live in this hazardous situation."

When this correspondent contacted Anala Reddy, Uppal Corporator, via phone she said, "We have been instructed to remove the transfer station, and we will come out with an action plan next year”, saying this she disconnected the call rather rudely.
