Secunderabad/Begumpet: With the Swachh Sarvekshan rankings around the corner, a 60 days unique programme is being implemented by Hyderabad’s largest municipality zones in order to sensitise citizens about the need for a clean Secunderabad and its neighbouring areas.

From conducting special programmes in schools and residential colonies to holding massive meetings with the Safai Karamcharis, the North Zone GHMC officials are adopting special ways to convey the “Swachh Hyderabad” message to larger populations who are directly or indirectly involved in the upkeep of sanitation levels in their areas of residence, work or travel.

Bottu-Tilak

GHMC officials had identified that not many households were giving the trash piles to the Swachh auto tippers but instead were dumping them in open near their houses thereby causing inconvenience to the passersby and also affecting the health of stray animals which fed on the food thrown in the dump along with plastic covers.

Hence, the Swachh Dooths or the Community Resource Persons went on a door-to-door campaign in areas of Begumpet, applied vermillion to residents of the houses and requested them to keep their surroundings clean by properly disposing off their garbage after segregating them into wet and dry wastes.

Haritha

As part of the Haritha programme, decomposing pits were dug up at various parks in and around Secunderabad to encourage residents living in the vicinity to adopt alternative means of disposing of food wastes and other forms of non-recyclable wet wastes from their houses. For instance, a decomposing pit was dug up at the Nehru Nagar colony park where wet wastes can be dumped and converted into manure for the growing plants.

Awareness Drive for Swachh Sarvekshan

A massive awareness programme on Swachh Survekshan-2018 was held at Hari Hara Kala Bhawan for officials, corporators, ward members, community resource persons, sanitation field officers, safai karamcharis and civilians living in the North zone of GHMC. As part of the event, cultural programmes highlighting the importance of clean city and the role of GHMC workers was showcased through song and dance performances.

The Community Resource Persons were motivated to ensure that families in residential colonies segregated their waste before giving them to the Swachh auto tippers. A demonstration of the same was given. Stalls regarding recycling of waste and the use of eco-friendly jute products were setup at the venue to inspire people.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy graced the occasion as the chief guest. Around 1500 people participated in the event. Gabbar Singh movie fame Sai Baba volunteered to be the brand ambassador for the Swachh Hyderabad activities in North zone.

Swachh Railway

Under the supervision of B Manohar Rao, Additional Commissioner of Swachh Bharat Mission, Hyderabad and Dr N Venkat Ramana, Assistant Medical Officer of Health, sanitation workers, cleaned the railway tracks at the Tukaram Gate where passers-by and passengers dispose food wrappers, plastic bottles etc. to eliminate bad odour in the area and curb the spread of diseases.

Swachh for students

Targetting young children to spread the message of cleanliness in their residential areas and at schools, the GHMC officials held orientation programmes at various educational institutions to teach students the importance of healthy surroundings.

One such event was conducted at the Sree Balaji High school in Boudhanagar wherein the students were explained about the purpose of the Swachh Sarvekshan and the important role they can play to bring the city among the top contenders in the Swachh rankings.

As part of the programme, the school principal SJ Raju, sanitation field assistants Dev Kumar, Narasimha, Srinivas and 400 school children took a Swachh Pledge. A Swachh School committee with students was formed to supervise sanitation levels at the
educational institution.
