A unique walk by the girls themed ‘Lado Beti-Pado Beti’ has been organised on Sunday from Lal Darwaza to Charminar. Hundreds of girls participated in the 2K Walk organised by Balala Hakkula Sangham and Children’s Foundation that eventually converged at Charminar in a public meeting.

The walk was headed by Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi, South Zone DCP Satyanarayana, Shamshabad DCP Padmaja, Child Rights Commission representative Ravathi and other prominent personalities.

Balala Hakkula Sangham president Achyut Rao said that the purpose of the walk was to create awareness among people about the child marriage and persuade people to refrain from early marriages of girls.

He said that the incidents of child marriage have been increasing in urban and rural areas of the state and that needed to be curbed at every level. He said, “The Main objectives of this walk is to focus on the problems faced by girls like child marriages, child abuse, child labor and school dropouts in the old city.”

He said that Balala Hakkula Sangham and other organisations were contemplating to write to the President and Prime Minister to make the minimum age of marriage for girls as 21 years instead of 18 years.

He also said that girl’s health was getting badly affected if they conceive immediately at the age of 18 and 19 years. Moreover, many people using duplicate certificates to get their daughters marry at the age of 16 or 17 years, he pointed out.

Other prominent persons participated in the walk include noted Gynecologist Dr Shobha, Psychiatrist Radhika, women activist Rakha and others.

The other purpose of the walk was to focus on the girl’s education emancipation. Several girls participated in the walk wearing costumes resembling Rani Rurdrama, Malala, Gauri Lankehs, P V Sindhu, Chakali Ailamma, M S Subbalaxmi, Sania Mirza and other prominent personalities. Balala Hakkula Sangham is planning for more such walks in different parts of the city.
