Hyderabad: In what can be termed as a first time in the history of the Waqf Board, the employees and the security personnel of Telangana Waqf Board were summoned to the Central Crime Station, by City Police here on Monday. On Saturday, few miscreants broke open the lock on the door of the accounts section on the first floor of Waqf Board office which is next to the chairman’s chamber.

The 32 CCTV cameras were not working on Saturday night. It is alleged that the miscreants cut the wires and tried to break the safe but were not successful. The authorities are yet to ascertain if records are missing or have been tampered with.

The chairman of Telangana Waqf Board said, “This is a handiwork of someone who comes regularly to the office.” When asked why it took so long for the authorities to know about the break in, he said, “The security guard does not have my number.”

There are four security guards for the building. The outsourced security guards have been removed. A security guard on duty on the floor is sick and was not at the site when the incident took place.

Other agencies affiliated to the Minorities Welfare department, such as Telangana State Urdu Academy also operates from the Haj House. “This incident has to be taken seriously and a probe is to be ordered immediately as there are thousands of important files,” said Md Imran, a resident of Chatrinaka.

It may be noted that a few months back, the Telangana State Waqf Board members were restricted to access the files and the revenue officials seized files and records section. Congress workers said, “The chairman is unable to safeguard his own wing and has no clue about the state of affairs. How can one expect this team to reclaim encroached Waqf lands.”
