A run to conserve water as rain-water harvesting pit

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director M Danakishore has called upon house-owners in the city to have a rain-water harvesting pit in their homes without fail.

Prior to flagging off 5K Run to sensitise people on Jalam-Jeevam programme, Dana Kishore said that the objective of the programme is to improve the ground water table. He wanted every resident to realise the significance of the programme. Therefore, many campaigns are being taken up to educate people on construction of rain-water harvesting structures and conserve water.

By the time, 1000 rain-water harvesting structures are ready for inauguration, extensive awareness programmes will be implemented to make people realise their significance. Sunday’s 5K Run programme was one such incident, he elaborated.

School children will be taught on the necessity to have rain-water harvesting structures and the benefits that will accrue to people from them.

Serilingampally MLA Arikepudi Gandhi advised city residents to have a rain-water harvesting pit in their homes. Channelising rain-water incident upon the roof-top into the pits will help increase the ground-water table so that the posterity will be free from drinking water problems, he said.

Later, Dana Kishore and Arikepudi Gandhi flagged off a rally of drinking water tankers bearing stickers of the Jalam-Jeevam programme. Hundreds of officials of the HMWSSB, students and residents of the city participated in the run. The special attraction of the 5K Run was the participation of minority school students of Bahadurpura along with their band.

HMWSSB executive director M Satyanarayana, technical director Dr PS Suryanarayanja, operations-I director Azmeera Krishna, project-I director D Sridhar Babu, operations-2 director P Ravi, finance director Vasudeva Naidu, revenue director B Vijay Kumar Reddy and others took part in the event.
