Hyderabad: American Oncology Institute, Hyderabad, conducted a two-day workshop here recently on “Foundation Oncology Skills for Pediatric Nurses.” The workshop was organised in collaboration with Children’s Cancer and Leukemia Group (United Kingdom) and pediatric hematology oncology chapter of Indian Academy of pediatrics.

The workshop aimed at all nurses working in pediatrics, pediatric hematology/oncology and PICU setting who do not have a qualification to give them knowledge around the basis of caring for a child with cancer. This workshop was attended by nurses from various city hospitals.

Speaking on the occasion, Zonal Director, American Oncology Institute Nilesh Gupta, said “Worldwide, every year more than 215,000 patient younger than 15 years are diagnosed with cancers and more than 80,000 die due to cancer. Earlier 5-year survival rate was less than 50 percent, but now because of better diagnosis and treatment options more than 80 percent of children with cancer survive for 5 years or more.

Nursing is the back bone for any health care facility and Pediatric nursing is an essential and integral part of care for the pediatric patients. They are not many who are trained for this field, hence, this two-day workshop was arranged for all nurses working in pediatrics, pediatric hematology/oncology and PICU setting to give them knowledge about care for child with cancer.”
