Secunderabad: The Secunderabad Cantonment board’s plan to find a location to shift the Trimulgherry dump yard which is at Mahatma Gandhi Community hall may prove to be a death knell for the residents of Jawahar Nagar.

Recently, a team led by Brig M D Upadhyay, president, SCB visited several wards to scout for vacant land for the construction of a dump yard. Some of the areas that the team visited include Suchitra, Bolarum, Kowkoor and Jawahar Nagar. According to sources, the possibility to zero down on A1 land which is close to Jawahar Nagar is bright.

In the meanwhile, the residents close to Jawahar Nagar are feeling the jitters as they are already suffering from pollution due to the Jawahar Nagar dump yard. Madhav, a resident of Ambedkarnagar says, “If the Cantonment dump yard is also shifted here, people will have no other option but to leave. Already, several cases of cancer have been reported and breathing problems is common.”

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board has a trenching yard at Turkapally but due to protests from Resident Welfare Associations, the board decided against using the land. The board then started using the Mahatma Gandhi Community hall as a transit point for the collection of garbage and then sent to the GHMC dump yard at Jawahar Nagar.

There are two views emerging on constructing a dump yard close to the GHMC dump yard at Jawahar Nagar. Some say as there is already a dump yard, why not have another one. Others question the idea as the people living around the dump yard at Jawahar Nagar are already facing health issues.

Few years back, the Union Ministry of Commerce had sanctioned Rs 50 crore for a solid waste management plant but the project was shelved due to several reasons, say officials.
