Chanchalguda: In a bid to make Hyderabad a beggar-free city, the Telangana Prisons department started rewarding anyone who identified a beggar with Rs 500 since December 25 last year. Now, to take forward the concept and give it a major fillip, the department increased the amount to Rs 1,000.

In the last few months, the Prisons department identified several beggars in the city and shifted them to Anand Ashrams or special homes located in Chanchalguda and Cherlapally. Officials say that there are still a large number of beggars in the city who create nuisance.

Beggars are given a choice to stay at the Anand Ashrams and learn a skill and those who wish to leave have to give assurance that they would not return to begging. However, many go back to begging.

A senior officer of Telangana Prisons said, “In spite of providing food, shelter, counseling and arming them with a skill many are not interested and return to beg. The amount to identify beggars has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 with an intention to intensify the drive against beggars.”
