Charminar: The fate of hawkers and vendors of Charminar seems lurching between the decision of authorities and opposition by the traders of gold and silver near Gulzar Houz and Kali Kaman.

Gold and silver traders and jewellers on the stretch have been fiercely opposing the idea of rehabilitating vendors in front of their shops. The vendors were allotted space in front of the traders’ shops two days ago as per lottery. However, jewelers are still opposing this idea.

They have been on strike and have kept their shops close for over five days now. Members of Jewellers’ association Ajay Kumar Agarwal, Ramesh Goyal, Vijay Kumar Agarwal, Mukesh Agarwal and others vehemently opposed this idea of rehabilitating the vendors.
Traffic police, GHMC officials along with local political leaders have conducted meetings with representatives of hawkers and provided them the much needed alternative space for business on Kali Kaman stretch however; this decision is not acceptable for gold traders here.

Traders allege that officials concerned were dealing the issue with recklessness and in violation of the norms. They said that alternative arrangements must have been made when the Charminar Pedestrian Project (CPP) works began. They demanded the Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao to intervene into the matter and resolve it amicably.

On the other hand hawkers started their business at the stretch after being allotted the space near Kalikaman from Monday. They were allotted the spots on Sunday evening after a meeting with representatives of their union.
