Parigi: As part of the greater decentralization of administration, the Government of Telangana has decided to create an additional 209 panchayats in Vikarabad district. In addition, the district proposed to set up Parigi and Kodangal nagara panchayats.

The panchayats of Parigi and Kodangal are likely to be upgraded into nagar panchayats in near future as part of the exercise to create an additional 209 panchayats in Vikarabad district. With the addition of gram panchayats, number of the panchayats in the district will go to 576 soon. Earlier, 212 panchayats are proposed to be created in the district. But the number boiled down to 209 after weighing various pros and cons.

On the basis of population, Parigi is qualified for upgradation into the nagar panchayat. Kodangal did not have the required population to upgrade it into a nagar panchayat. However, the new nagar panchayat would be created merging panchayats neighbouring to Kodangal. Transport Minister Mahender Reddy reviewed the proposal to create additional panchayats with MLAs and MLCs and with district collectors of undivided Ranga Reddy district.

Of the 209 new panchayats proposed, 95 are new panchayats and 45 thandas to be upgraded into panchayats and the rest of the panchayats will be created carving new panchayats out of the existing 65 panchayats. The minister will take a final decision on the basis of the suggestions offered by the people’s representatives. In Nawabpet mandal, creation of two or three panchayats is likely.
