Hyderabad: Young anaesthesiologists were trained on the advancements in ultrasound guided nerve blocks in acute and chronic pain in the two-day conference held by Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Anaesthesia Department.

The objective of the workshop was to disseminate knowledge among the training and practicing anaesthesiologists regarding the use of ultrasound. The workshop was conducted by experienced faculty, from within and outside the state, which was organized by Dr.A. Bharathi and Dr Nagalaxmi under the guidance of Dr. C Naresh Kumar Reddy, HOD, Department of Anaesthesiology, KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad.

Ultrasound provides real time imaging of nerve blocks which increases safety of anesthesia; peri-operative nerve blocks provide an effective alternative to general anesthesia particularly in high risk patients. Chronic pain blocks improve the quality of life particularly in cancer patients and improve the quality of palliative care.

The workshop was significant as it emphasised the widespread use of ultrasound for safe and effective nerve blocks in peri-operative setup and chronic pain clinics. We took the opportunity to create a platform to enhance awareness and share knowledge.

The two- day session featured lectures on the basics of ultrasound and hands-on workshop on various acute and chronic pain blocks. The emphasis has been more on the hands-on workshop as the delegates get a chance to learn handling and nuances of ultrasound from our experienced faculty.

Speaking on the occassion Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao, MD & CEO, KIMS Hospitals said,” We at KIMS Hospitals are committed to setting up platform for knowledge sharing and training. Besides the core health care, we have always been committed to create these training opportunities. Ultrasound in peri-operative nerve blocks facilitates a safe and effective alternative for general anesthesia in high risk patients and also as a means for pain relief during the pre and post operative setting. It is replacing the older blind techniques by providing a real time imaging of the anatomy.”

‘This is the second annual hands-on ultrasound workshop in anesthesiology and pain in our hospital. Together we shall conduct many such programs in the future for the training of anesthesiologists’ he said.
