Hyderabad: The latest study conducted by Shaheen Women’s Resource and Welfare Association shows that more than 2000 young girls below the age of 18 years were married to men thrice their age. These child marriages have not been in records and have not come under the notice of the police department.

The child marriages have taken place in the 20 bastis in the Old City with a population of 60,000. They also include girls from Hindu families. According to Jameela Nishat, chief functionary of Shaheen Women’s Resource and Welfare Association, attaining puberty was the major reason for the conduct of marriages. She further added, “Acute poverty, lack of education and getting in to the trap of brokers is a major problem.”

The mean age for marriage according to the study both for Muslim as well as Hindu girls is 15.83. In a one-day conference held in the city on Wednesday, chief Qazi for Hyderabad Mir Mohammad Khader Ali said that the age difference between a man and woman should not be more than 10 years and directed all the qazis to adhere to this and not conduct marriages.

The meet was attended by Shariyath Panha Balda, president, Anjuman-e-Quazath, Telangana, Syed Abdul Aziz, area Qazi, and Syed Khaled Ali. Imtiaz Rahim, district child protection officer, Susheela Reddy, regional organizer, Women and Child Welfare department, G K Sunanda, district welfare officer, Rubina Philip, Mahita NGO and Sadhna Takhur, in-charge, Beti Bachao Beti Padao, BJP Hyderaabad attended the conference.
