Fisherpura: Move over dogs, it is pigs that are now causing a pain in the neck for residents of Secunderabad Cantonment. The residents in and around Yerukala Basti are in deep trouble as pigs are reared and fed. The workers of pig farm bring in waste food from the nearest restaurants and store it in open drums for days to feed pigs.

The stench is unbearable and residents have complained to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board officials but to no avail. When contacted, a senior official of the health and sanitation department said, “We are inspecting all the areas to ensure hygiene and never came across the bad living conditions of Yerukala Basti. We will look into the problem and direct officials to deal with the owners of the illegal pig farm and make sure the residents are safe.”

For many years now, a portion of the defence land is under encroachment by pig farm at Yerukala Basti in Fisherpura. The stench emanating from the stored food is causing inconvenience to the residents and they are prone to deadly diseases with the mosquito bite. But, even after several complaints from the residents, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board has not yet given a single attempt to clear the menace and the officials care damn about its maintenance.

“Our lives are at risk, we suffer from dengue and with other deadly diseases every year. With the chunk of stored food reeking of foul smell is unbearable. We cannot afford to stand outside the house for more than a minute. The entire land just got uglier with garbage all over and left unattended despite being back of SCB to look into the problem”, says locals. “The owners who run the farm engage in war of words when asked to vacate the area. They start abusing,” informs Lakshmibai, a resident.

On the other hand, the existing public toilets to the corner on the roadside was purely used to chop pig meat. The locals are reluctant to use the smelly toilets with blood stains all over. Not just the locals but it became a herculean task for the cantonment sweepers to clean the area near to the toilets. “It is very difficult to clean up the dismal condition of the portion next to the toilets. The filth includes the hair of pigs and blood stains all over,” says sweepers.
