Masab Tank: The Masab Tank bridge that was painted with aesthetic works of art depicting the biodiversity, is being scrubbed and whitewashed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The work started about two days ago and will be finished within a couple of weeks, said a painter Mahamood who is assigned to paint the bridge.

The paintings of birds, macaques, tribes, and heritage will be vanished in a few weeks and the bridge will be painted with neat beige wash. Quite similar was the story of Lakdi ka Pul bridge where the murals which reminded us the life of pheasants was erased with blue wash and then opportunists painted the plain walls with luminant and flashy political messages.

The paintings of Masab Tank Bridge were engraved during COP 11, a biodiversity conference which was conducted in Hyderabad in the year 2012. Sandesh, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU) said “These paintings were made by our seniors who are sad to see what is happening. By doing this, he says, GHMC is erasing the passion of students”.

Another student form college expressed, “This is the tale of the government, on one hand they promote the work on the other, they vandalise the artworks”. JNAFAU Head of the department of Painting, said “GHMC did not pay our students for their efforts to paint the bridge. When they assigned the work, students have painted the bridge with enthusiasm and zeal which is now being erased. I feel sorry for it! Officials do not understand the aesthetics of beauty, what disappoints me more is the hastiness and urgency of government when it comes to beautifying the city.

Government orders painters in rush and they paint everything they come across, it was shocking to see the palm trees painted with flashy fluorescent colours which illuminate at night I have heard that those plants are dying now, because the colours are not natural.” GHMC on one hand promotes the artists but fail to maintain the works. It is the job of artists to create and government should take responsibility to sustain it.
