Neknapur: Throwing caution to the winds, the labourers of construction sites burnt the piled up garbage close to Neknapur Lake here on Friday evening. In 2017, locals asked the GHMC officials to remove the garbage near the lake.

The fire that started from Thursday evening, continued till early morning

Speaking to The Hans India, Madhulika Choudary of Dhruvansh, an NGO working for the protection and conservation of the lake said, “It is the handiwork of the site owners who instruct labourers to burn the garbage as it would become easy for them to encroach the lake.”

There are close to 70 labourers who live in make-shift tents who burnt the garbage. When the Neknampur gram panchayat secretary Srinivas Reddy was contacted, he said that they would have to investigate. It could also have happened due to a cigarette butt.” Locals however, say that even last year there was a huge fire and at that time as well it was well orchestrated.

The Telangana government has banned open burning of waste materials in open lands as well as at landfill sites. Anybody throwing garbage in the lake has to pay the fine of Rs.25, 000, said a member of Dhruvansh. This is creating more disturbances to the eco-group Dhruvansh who are connected too much with the lake. The fire in the lake burned for 12 hours. Many cases are still pending and no action has been taken on them.

Till 2002, the lake was fresh later it kept getting polluted by all the fire smoke coming from the waste garbage. Neknampur gram panchayat secretary said, “Before also the mixing of garbage was happening after which we requested GHMC not to burn the garbage.” Superintending engineer irrigation department Shekhar Reddy said, “We inspected the place and our people are taking care of the lake.”
