The voluntary organisation which has been striving hard across different communities in India for more than three decades to discourage the custom of dowry by highlighting the wide-ranging problems attached to it, found its way of communicating the message through its ‘short films’ in the recent years. The Quddar’s lead actor, Abdul Qadeer (in the character of drunkard) plays the role brilliantly and the story revolves around him where he observes methods adopted by people to earn money.

Its first short film ‘Aqd-e-Nikah’ directed by P Gopi Krishna has already crossed 1 million views and 40,000 shares on social media platforms including Facebook. “Aqd (marriage) is an agreement, but we are deceiving each other in its name as unnecessary customs like dowry and extravaganza have cropped in,” laments Aleem Khan Falaki, its founder.

Some of the other short-films (15 to 20 min) which were received warmly by the audiences include ‘Mard Kaun’ (comedy genre) also directed by P Gopi Krishna. While providing entertaining, this short-film tries to stir the conscience of men who accepts dowry from a woman, hence the name. It challenges the man if he is really masculine in nature, if it is so then should avoid money from woman’s side and also spend his own money on marriage.

Another short film shot later is ‘Ready Made Dulha’ and focuses on dowry and extravaganza in the weddings. The short film ‘Adaalat’, with its sensitive issue of woman’s dilemma, when her brother accepts substantial dowry was also watched maximum number of people on social media and is considered to be amongst the best short films on this subject. The fifth amongst these short films is ‘Khusi se’ (also of comedy genre), takes the satirical view of customs prevalent in the society.

It questions the offerings made to the bridegroom by the bride’s family ‘with pleasure’ and stirs the conscience of viewers and raises question if those paying bribe and those accepting it ‘with pleasure’ were not the culprits. “It is not that the Society is only working through short-films, we have our own literature to take head on over the social evils particularly, the dowry custom in India. I believe this is the root-cause for most of the ingrained problems the nation currently is facing,” he added.
