Hayathnagar: The Government Primary School in Jaffarguda is closed for the past two years as the parents started enrolling their wards in private schools. Locals in Hayatnagar are giving government schools a miss. Thanks to the absenteeism by teachers and the general lackadaisical attitude, the school has now turned into a ‘ghost school’.

Local corporator, Pandavi told The Hans India, “Since students are not willing to join, it has shut down and a request to the government officials to transfer the staff to other schools or institutions has been made. There are more private schools being set up here, and hence are preferred by locals.” Sridhar, secretary of the school said, “Two years ago there were only 10-12 students who would attend the school but were shifted to private schools, so we have closed the school.”

Sunitha, one of the school staffs said, “We used to give quality education to the students, but as days passed, they started joining private schools. Though most of them are not financially sound, they prefer private schools.”

Renuka, who always wanted her children to study in a private school despite her family’s financial situation said, “We borrow money from microfinance agencies or from my parents to pay the school fee.” When asked why she didn’t consider a government school where education is free, she says, “As a matter of fact, private schools are better, but I want them to get quality education, speak fluent English and get better jobs, unlike me.”
