Hyderabad: Lack of maintenance of Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Hussainsagar Lake is causing extreme in pollution in the water body. Despite two STPs of 20 Million Liter per Day (MLD) and 30 MLD capacities, sewerage water has seeped into the lake, particularly in the past fortnight.

While, last year the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) officials had handed over two STPs to Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) they have failed to serve the intended purpose. They are getting heavy flow of sewerage water, which is posing a major health problem. Sources in HMDA said that a major pollutant has come in the form of sewerage water flowing from Kukatpally nala for almost two weeks now.

Meanwhile, a HMWS&SB official agreed that the flow of sewerage water was higher than the STP capacity. He seemed clueless on diverting the sewerage water to Amberpet nala. In a move that is a welcome measure, though belated, as a means to restrict sewer water entering into the lake from Kukatpally nala the HMDA officials had decided to construct Interception and Diversion structure (I and D structure) at Necklace Road at a projected cost of Rs 6 crore. This is capable of bringing down the contamination levels quite significantly.
