White Savior Barbie Satirical Instagram Account Goes Viral

Savior Barbie's Instagram satirical account imagined the doll playing an altruistic role, hence mocking the
humanitarian tourism's naive optimism in Africa.

She has this feeling there must be more meaning to life and she’s headed to Africa to find herself, save the
children and take a bunch of killer Instagrams.

Savior Barbie or 'Benefactor Barbie's Instagram account is going viral. Photo montages show for instance a white
Barbie surrounded by tiny black dolls, on another she can be seen posing before a slum, or with the African
continent tattoo. These images are based on western humanitarian selfies and make fun of the so-called 'h
humanitarian tourism'.

The account’s creators are two white women in their 20s who have themselves volunteered in East Africa.

‘At this point, we just want Barbie Savior to be a topic of discussion in terms of what is and isn’t appropriate
behavior abroad. It seems almost rude or harsh to question a well-intentioned person’s motives or actions.
‘But the reality is, when other people’s lives are at stake, it’s only fair that these questions are brought up
and that people are held accountable for their actions.’
