The Consumer Association officials have suggested that over 2 billion US dollars worth of food gets wasted during Muslim's holy fasting month, Ramadan.

Datuk Nadzim Johan, head of the Muslim Consumers' Association (PPIM), said that foods like chicken and vegetables that get wasted during the breaking of fast creates artificial demand and pushes up prices in the market.

He added that many Muslims are trapped in a fasting culture where they fast and then eat what they want and throw away the rest, but Malaysians need to condemn this culture and authorities should enforce something against this, reported Malaysia Insider.

Nadzim explained that Ramadan buffets, which are sponsored by some hotels, adds to it, as the variety on the menus lead to a food wastage that goes against the spirit of the fasting month.

He also suggested establishing a food collection centre to prevent wastage.
