Another 227 people were wounded in the Imam Sadiq Mosque in Kuwait City, reports the BBC.

An Islamic State-affiliated group was quoted, as saying that it was responsible for the attack.

The IS has already carried out similar attacks in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Friday's attack was the first on a Shia mosque in Kuwait.

A spokesman for the Kuwait National Petroleum Company was quoted, as saying that security is being being stepped up at oil installations around the country following the attack on the mosque.
