New Delhi: ‘Throw a spanner in the works’ has been the attitude of Pakistan, whenever India creates conducive atmosphere for peace talks between the two. Pakistan without blinking an eye will immediately resort to a deliberately conceived preemptive measure to stall any move that India plans to take the talks forward. On the eve of July 10 when Prime Minister Modi was supposed to meet Pak PM Nawaz Sharif in Ufa, Russia for a cordial meet and set the tone for reopening the Indo-Pak dialogue beginning with Security Advisor level, Pak troops resorted to heavy shelling across the LoC.
Also after both the prime ministers met, Sartaz Aziz, Pak National Security advisor makes a statement which he thinks is innocuous, which says that “Sharif during his meeting in Russian city of Ufa told Prime Minister Modi that more information is required to expedite the 26/11 Mumbai attacks trial”. During Modi's meeting with Sharif, the Indian side reportedly sought the voice sample of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind behind the Mumbai terror attacks who is out on bail in Pakistan.
Pakistan did a U-turn on Mumbai attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi on Sunday, stating that voice samples of the LeT commander are not likely to be provided. Just two days after there are voices from the other side of the boundary that directly refer to the issue with no uncertainty, which show that the Pakistani administration weaves a dirty web of tricks to stop India in tracks on the peace talks issue.
“The issue of obtaining voice samples of Lakhvi is over. We had filed an application in the trial court in 2011, seeking voice sample of Lakhvi but the judge (Malik Akram Awan) had dismissed it on the ground that no such law exists that allows obtaining of voice samples of an accused,” The prosecution team’s chief in the case Chaudhry Azhar said.
“The government will not file a fresh petition in the trial court requesting for obtaining voice samples of Lakhvi,” he added. Aziz also shows his diplomatic prowess saying that “the July 10 meeting achieved one major objective -- reducing tensions in order to create an environment for meaningful talks on all issues significant for both countries”.
"Our country and our region have several challenges ranging from outstanding issues like Kashmir to terrorism to poverty and low human development," Aziz said. Aziz reiterated that the informal discussion between the two leaders was "not the formal start of a dialogue process".
However, he said, the meeting served the purpose of achieving an understanding that tensions and hostility between the two countries need to be reduced in order to engage in dialogue pertaining to bilateral issues, including Kashmir.
