At least five soldiers have been killed in attacks believed to have been carried out by Islamist militants on two military checkpoints in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula.


According to Egyptian authorities, the gunmen targeted the checkpoints near the northern town of Sheikh Zuweid, reported the BBC.

The facilities were among the military installations attacked by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ( ISIS) militants two weeks ago, in which 17 soldiers were killed.

Sinai has recently witnessed a spate of attacks on the Egyptian military.
