Sri Lanka Navy on Thursday said it has arrested six Indian fishermen for allegedly fishing in Lankan waters.

The Navy said it assisted the Sri Lankan coastal guards in the seas off Kovilan Point to nab the fishermen last night.

"When the arrest was made the Indian fishermen had been fishing 3.5 nautical miles and 5.2 nautical miles off northwest of Kovilan Point," the Navy said.

The arrested fishermen and their two trawlers have been taken to Karainagar to be handed over to the fisheries authorities, it said.

The arrests came days after the Lankan northern fishing organisations rejected a request from their Tamil Nadu counterparts to discuss the recurring issue of poaching by Indian fishermen in the Sri Lankan waters.

Officials in Tamil Nadu said the six fishermen from the state were arrested when they were fishing near Karainagar North.

The fishermen belong to Jadapattinam in Pudukottai district, Assistant Director of Fisheries Sekar said.

The navy had on September 21 arrested 15 fishermen hailing from Akkaraipettai in Nagapattinam district on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line.

Voicing concern over the arrest of the fishermen by Lankan Navy in the 'vicinity' of Katchatheevu, Chief Minister J Jayalalaithaa had yesterday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "retrieve" the islet from Sri Lanka.

She also sought steps for their immediate release along with 28 boats that are in Lankan custody.

Meanwhile, a group of six fishermen, reported missing since September 21, were traced near Katchativu. An Indian Coast Guard ship had rushed to the spot to rescue them, Fisheries Department sources said.
