Speaking at the "Digital India" event for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Silicon Valley, Microsoft's Satya Nadella spoke about the transition that he had seen in India since his childhood at a remote district.

Mr Nadella spoke about a "very haunting image" from his childhood in Srikakulam in 1970.

"I saw two lean people who lay in overturned charpoys with two transistor radios. They were schoolteachers who decided to give up teaching. I think about those people and what they could have achieved today," said the Microsoft CEO.

He also marveled about the change in India today. "I visited a rural village where, to my surprise, students were using Skype, were engaged in tech discussions," he said.

Outlining his company's projects in India, he said there were plans to take technology to 500,000 villages in India.

"Bringing world class infrastructure to India and respecting India's digital securities is a key milestone for us," he said.

Mr Nadella was among 350 CEOs who met PM Modi during his two-day trip the Silicon Valley, the first ever by any Indian prime minister.
