Maldives' First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim and several others were injured in a blast on President Yameen Abdul Gayoom's speedboat as he returned home after preforming the Haj in Saudi Arabia.

The blast occurred on Monday as the boat reached the Izzuddin jetty in the capital city of Male.

Gayoom's wife and two other officials suffered minor injuries, Sun online, a Maldivian media station, quoted minister Mohamed Shareef as saying.

The cause of the blast, thought to have happened in the engine room, was not yet clear, Shareef said.

The country's international airport is on a separate island and a short boat trip is needed to reach the capital island.

A journalist who was at the jetty to cover Gayoom's arrival said a blast was heard as soon as the boat docked.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said.
