Taliban fighters were attempting to seize control of the airport in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz late on Tuesday, after the militants seized a provincial capital for the first time since their ouster 14 years ago.

The fighters were flooding into the airport and about 80 per cent of the complex was under their control, according to an Afghan security official, who asked not to be named.

The Islamist group was driven out of cities when it was ousted from power by a NATO coalition in 2001, but has maintained control over parts of the countryside. Kunduz, in the northeast, is the country’s fifth largest city, situated around 150 miles (250 kilometres) north of the capital Kabul.

The city fell Monday with the Taliban overrunning government buildings and hoisting their flag in the city square.

Sarwar Hussaini, a provincial police spokesman, on Tuesday had said that Afghan forces launched an operation on several fronts around Kunduz to try and retake the city.
