On Saturday, the dome of the containment was installed which marked the start of a new construction stage. Two months ahead of schedule, the dome installation means the following start of “clear” zone creation in hermovolume as well as the beginning of the main equipment assembling. That is how the civil construction of Tianwan 4 NPP phase has finished.

The lifting of the dome of 258 tones took about an hour and a half and was carried out using a crane the carrying capacity of which is 3200 tones. Total weight of the metal work amounted to 341 tones. The dome is made of carbon steel panels. Its bottom diameter is 44 m, its heights is 22 m. At the moment it is the largest dome of the containment in China.

The next construction step is the main equipment assembling including main circulation pipelines and pumps. After the containment is constructed and the tensioning systems are installed, the construction of the reactor’s outer shell will start.

The containment is the forth security barrier of an NPP. The containment building made of two layers including the dome prevents radioactive materials from getting into the atmosphere, also serving as the physical protection of the equipment inside from natural and technogenic factors like earthquakes, thunderstorms, tsunami and airplane crash. According to Valery Limarenko, CEO of the NIAEP – ASE United Company, Tianwan NPP is the first NPP in the world equipped with modern safety systems operating at the moment.
