American anti-abortion activist Troy Newman was on Saturday deported to the US after losing his high court bid to stay in Australia.

Newman is the head of anti-abortion group "Operation Rescue" and was due to speak in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart and Cairns over the next week, ABC reported.

In the past, he has called for doctors who perform terminations to be executed for murder.

Newman had his visa cancelled by the immigration department after several Australian politicians raised concerns that his presence could cause significant harm to the community.

Despite having his visa revoked, Newman flew into Melbourne from the US on Thursday.

On Friday, his lawyers tried unsuccessfully to appeal the decision to cancel his visa.

In a statement, Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said he had instructed the department to "expedite" Newman's removal from Australia.
