The CBS’ Steve Kroft raised the issue during an interview for 60 Minutes in which he questioned whether the Russian leader’s actions have forced the United States to take a back seat in world events.
“Well, Steve, I’ve got to tell you, if you think that running your economy into the ground and having to send troops in, in order to prop up your only ally is leadership, then we’ve got a different definition of leadership,” Obama responded.
Last year Russia drew the ire of the US for aiding pro-Russian separatists in an armed revolt against the Ukraine government and for annexing the Crimean peninsula in southern Ukraine, New York Post said. Now, Putin has deployed air power to Syria under the guise of fighting IS. But US says his real goal is to prop up the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
“When I came into office, Ukraine was governed by a corrupt ruler who was a stooge of Mr. Putin,” Obama said. “Syria was Russia’s only ally in the region. And today, rather than being able to count on their support and maintain their base in Syria, Putin now is devoting his own troops, his own military, just to barely hold together by a thread his sole ally.”
