Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today recalled the stellar role played by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and contribution of the Malay Indians in the Indian National Army.

"Thousands of your forefathers came forward to join Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army. Women poured out in large numbers from the comfort of their homes to march shoulder to shoulder with Netaji Subhas Bose," Prime Minister Modi said while addressing the Indian community here.

"Today in Kuala Lumpur, we will name our cultural centre after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose," he added.

Prime Minister Modi also said that the Malay-Indians, who responded with courage and passion to Netaji's call, were also inspired by the life and mission of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Prime Minister's praise of Netaji comes barely few months after his government ordered the declassification of Bose's files.

Experts and members of the Bose family had, however, raised questions on whether random declassification of files will solve the mystery around Netaji's disappearance.

Conspiracy theories appeared within hours of Netaji's death in 1945.

Following a meeting with a host of Netaji's descendants and historians, Prime Minister Modi had announced that the Centre would declassify files related to Bose from January 23 - his birth anniversary.
