Pakistan is fully capable of defending itself against any "Indian aggression", Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said today as he blamed India for "spoiling the atmosphere" and "creating distances" between the two neighbours.

"If India exhibits good intentions, Pakistan also desire amicable ties with its neighbouring country," Mr Asif was quoted as saying by Radio Pakistan.

Blaming India for the downturn in the bilateral relations, Mr Asif said: "The extremist mentality with which (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi soared to great heights, the same mentality has now triggered his fall."

Asserting that Pakistan is fully capable of defending itself from "Indian aggression", he said that India spoiled the atmosphere and created distances. However, he said every effort that can be made for peace must be undertaken.
