France passes new law forbidding food waste. Foodwaste is a crime. This unprecedented step will force all large supermarket chains to donate unsold food to charities or farmers.

A new law has been passed that will ban grocery stores from throwing away unsold food. If it is safe to eat, the food must be donated to charity - if not, it goes to farmers for use as animal feed or compost.

Supermarkets will no longer be able to destroy unsold food intentionally in order to prevent people from eating it, a measure commonly known to avoid food poisoning. Supermarkets will no longer be allowed to render foodstuffs inedible by pouring water or bleach on them - previously a common practice. Those who won't observe the newly passed law will face penalties, including fines of up to 75,000 euros (rupees 50 lakhs) or two years in jail.

"France will become the leading country in Europe" says Socialist MP Guillaume Garot who helped frame these new measures about combating food waste.
