Two explosions ripped through Brussels airport on Tuesday during the morning rush hour as hundreds of passengers were trying to check in. Airport authorities said the explosions have caused several injuries and killed at least one person.

The cause of the explosions was not immediately clear. Sky news in London said the blasts had occurred in the departures lounge and cited reports it had occurred near the American Airlines desk.

Passengers were led onto the tarmac and the crisis center urged people not to come to the airport. Panic and chaos prevailed at the airport as people started fleeing after hearing the explosions.

Brussels Airport authorities took to Twitter to warn people about the situation at the airport.Belgian media said rail traffic to the airport was suspended. The airport is being evacuated.Brussels has been on high alert since the deadly Paris attacks November 13 which killed 129 people.

Earlier this week, Belgian police arrested Salah Abdeslam, the prime suspect in Paris attacks, who was shot in the leg before being detained.
