The United Nations says 50 world leaders are among representatives of 110 countries expected at the first UN humanitarian summit later this month, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The United Nations says 50 world leaders are among representatives of 110 countries expected at the first UN humanitarian summit later this month, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Summit spokesman Herve Verhoosel said in a statement late Monday that 50 other countries have expressed interest in participating in the May 23-24 conference in Istanbul.
The figures represent an increase from the 45 world leaders and 80 governments announced as attending earlier this month.
A focus of the summit is closing the gap between funds required and donations to help the needy. Last year, the gap was a record $9.3 billion to assist 120 million people.
About 6,000 others are also taking part but Doctors Without Borders announced last week it will not attend because the summit is non-binding.
