Washington: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's wife Melania has condemned his lewd remarks about kissing and trying to have sex with women, calling them "unacceptable and offensive."

Trump made the remarks in 2005, shortly after his third marriage to Melania, but the footage was made public only on Saturday, just 30 days from the election and on the eve of his second debate with rival Hillary Clinton.

In the recording, he talks about trying to seduce a married woman. "I did try and f*** her. She was married." He goes on to brag about his past liaisons, "Grab them by the p****. You can do anything... When you're a star they let you do it."

The video faced severe backlash, and his own vice presidential running mate Mike Pence criticised him.

The video faced severe backlash, and his own vice presidential running mate Mike Pence criticised him. "As a husband and a father, I was offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump... I do not condone the remarks and cannot defend them," Pence said.

Melania, a former Slovenian model and Trump's wife of 11 years, in her statement said, "This does not represent the man that I know." However, she appealed to the people to forgive him, "I hope people will accept his apology, as I have, and focus on the important issues facing our nation and the world." Even as several people, including Republicans asked Trump to drop out of the race, he remained defiant.

He posted a video apology on Facebook where he said: "Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong, and I apologise." He also took to twitter to say, "The media and establishment want me out of the race so badly - I WILL NEVER DROP OUT OF THE RACE, WILL NEVER LET MY SUPPORTERS DOWN!".
