Washington D.C. [United States]: United States President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia to the White House on Tuesday.

"Today, President Trump and the First Lady welcomed King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain to the White House," the White House tweeted.

The royals are in the US to mark the 300th anniversaries of the founding of the countries two cities -- New Orleans, Louisiana and San Antonio, Texas.

According to the US media, while King Felipe branded his first Oval Office meeting with the president as a "great end to a perfect visit", Trump called it "really a tremendous honor" to have the royal couple in the Oval Office.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia officially began their tour of New Orleans on Friday afternoon with a welcoming event at the Gallier Hall in New Orleans, Louisiana, a Twitter handle which goes by the name Her Royal Highness tweeted.

"Mayor of New Orleans LaToya Cantrell presented a key to the city to the King and the Queen as part of the city's 300th anniversary celebration," it added.

Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Paul Ryan met King Felipe VI and reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties.

Mayor of New Orleans LaToya Cantrell took to Twitter and said the Spanish royal couple are reshaping what it means to lead in this new country.

"It is an honor and a true privilege to welcome King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia to New Orleans at this historic moment for our City.

The King and Queen of Spain are reshaping what it means to lead in this new century," the mayor of New Orleans tweeted.

The king and queen were expected to meet with several congressional leaders.
